Black Tie Required

Ieri, nel tedio di una serata casalinga, ispirato da Cole Porter e dalla sua musica, mi sono ritrovato per le mani un vecchissimo volantino che pubblicizzava le "giacchette da sera" della SNIA Lane Italiane (credo che fosse un coupon di epoca fascista). Di lì, notando che, in effetti, mancano solo sei settimane alle Feste Natalizie, e che probabilmente molti si troveranno a dover indossare lo smoking, ho pensato di soffermarmi a discutere un po' di questo meraviglioso abito, vera espressione dello spirito classico e di stile. In effetti, lo smoking ha intorno a sè un' allure di fascinosa eleganza, un po' perchè, per il suo aspetto formale, non è proprio l' abito maschile più sdoganato, soprattutto tra i più giovani, (e ancora di più nella "democratica dittatura del jeans" post anni '70), un po' perchè, nonostante sia, in fondo, un' uniforme, ed abbia regole rigidissime per essere indossato correttamente, la sua diffusione negli ambienti "à la page" ne ha fatto l' emblema di quella società d' alto rango, un po' dandy e un po' snob: non a caso, parlando di smoking sovvengono alla memoria personaggi come 007, l' agente segreto creato da I. Fleming, Fred Astaire, Buster Keaton , ma anche il Duca di Windosr, sempiterno maestro d' eleganza, l' Avvocato Gianni Agnelli, il cognato di lui, il conte Nuvoletti... Naturalmente, data l' ampia risonanza che questi ed altri personaggi hanno dato allo smoking, molti di noi "comuni mortali" sarebbero ansiosi di indossarne uno. Ed ecco, allora, spuntare giacche grige, disegni paisley tono su tono, revers dalla forma indefinita, bottoni poligonali... insomma una kermesse per tutti i (cattivi) gusti! E, invece, imbroccare lo smoking giusto non è affatto difficile: regolandosi su corporatura ed età, si sceglieranno gli unici quattro modelli accettati dall' etichetta: doppio o monopetto con revers a lancia; o doppio o monopetto con revers sciallati. Fatta salva l'unica differenza tra il doppiopetto sciallato,che tende a presentare una scollatura piuttosto profonda, ed un' allacciatura bassa di soli due bottoni, ed il doppiopetto a lancia, con la classica allacciatura a quattro bottoni, in modo da favorire la scollatura, senza tuttavia penalizzare la struttura del tronco, i due principali generi di smoking si presentano, in tutti i particolari, identici: revers in raso nero (nei rari casi in cui l' etichetta permetta di indossare la giacca bianca, i revers saranno del tessuto della stessa), tasche della giacca senza patta, il pantalone è senza risvolto nè pences,  difetta dei passanti per la cintura (viene tenuto su da sottili bretelle bianche, o dal cummerbund, la fascia di seta che si allaccia in vita) e presenta un gallone laterale in raso nero. Il perfetto smoking si declina in nero o, al massimo, in midnight blue, nella versione più dandy introdotta dal Duca di Windsor. per indossarlo appropriatamente, si ricorderà di tenere sempre l' unico bottone della giacca (rivestito in raso, come quelli sulle maniche) allacciato. L' unica giustificazione ad una giacca aperta è l' uso del panciotto, anch' esso nero, a tre bottoni, da abbinare preferibilmente allo smoking sciallato, di stampo più classico.

Particolare attenzione va data alla camicia: mai con le ali ribattute in alto (il colletto diplomatico va riservato rigorosamente al frac), presenta polsino doppio per i gemelli, uno sparato a piegoline e, a seconda dei casi, una fila di bottoni gioiello, preferibilmente da abbinare ai gemelli (nell'accezione più classica, sullo sparato perfettamente teso e inamidato, bottoni in oro e onice, in perfetta pendant con i polsini), o una fascia a coprire i bottoni, che saranno comunque di madreperla australiana. Data la mancanza di una cintura a stringere la vita, sia che il modello scelto sia su misura,sia che sia pret a porter, si dovrebbe far corredare la camicia di un bottone sull' estremità bassa, da allacciare ad una linguetta interna al pantalone, in modo da evitare l' effetto palloncino.

 Inutile ricordare che il papillon va assolutamente annodato a mano,e deve essere in assoluta pendant con il cummerbund, da indossare in mancanza del panciotto e, di conseguenza,delle bretelle. Se c'è un caso in cui le classiche Oxford nere sono inadatte, quello è proprio l' abbinamento con lo smoking: in effetti, le scarpe davvero appropriate sarebbero le pumps da ballo con il fiocco in grosgrain di seta ma, sempre più rare,esse cedono il passo alle più contemporanee parigine lisce in vernice nere. Alle scarpe, sarà abbinata la calza al ginocchio di seta nera. Infine, mai indugiare su una mantella a ruota, in caso di soprabito: un cappotto nero,meglio se modello Chesterfield (con il colletto in velluto), sarà più che appropriato. Guanti in vitello o pecari nero e,se le temperature lo impongono, un borsalino da sera o, al massimo,una bombetta; in ogni caso, al bando il cilindro (che, come la mantella, va abbinato al frac)! Consigliandovi i modelli della collezione Purple Label di Ralph Lauren per un tocco di intima vezzosità, vi lascio con una nota: curiosando nel negozio di Valentino, l' anno scorso, ho pescato uno smoking con giacca pied de poule bianca, a cui si accompagnava un dolcevita in candido cashmere, che mi ha assolutamente folgorato... a riprova che, dietro la monolitica regola, si nascondono mille strade per innovare, seppur con gusto, che è, d' altronde, il bespoke della Traditional Revolution!

There, noticing that, in effects, six weeks to the Christmas Festivities, and that probably many people will have to wear the tuxedo, I have thought to stop to discuss a bit of this wonderful dress, true expression of the classic spirit and style. In effects, the tuxedo has around itself an allure of gorgeous elegance, a  bit because, for its formal aspect, it is not the most diffused male dress, above all between young, (and still more in the " democratic dictatorship of the jeans" post years ' 70), a  bit because, although it's an uniform, and has the most rigid rules for being worn correctly, its spread in atmospheres " à la page" it has made some the emblema of that high society, a bit dandy and a bit snob: for the tuxedo, carachters as 007 come to memory, Fred Astaire, Buster Keaton, but also the Duke of Windosr, great master of elegance, Gianni Agnelli lawyer, the brother-in-law of he, conte the Nuvoletti Naturally, date l' wide resonance that these and other personages have given to the tuxedo, many of we " municipalities mortali" they would be expectant to wear one.
